An unusual and very uncommon world map on Mercator's projection. The map's title is taken from Kircher's scientific world map. However, Seyfried's map does not indicate ocean currents. It does include three large volcanoes shown erupting in the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Oceans. It also places large, crater shaped, lakes in the mountainous regions of the Alps, Himalayas, Andes and southern Africa. The depiction of North America is intriguing with the ISLAND OF CALIFORNIA, an open-ended Fr. Anian, and a huge Terradi Iesso, which is separated from Asia by a narrow straight (Fretum di Iesso). Northern and Southern polar projections are inset at left.
