A very interesting and unusual map showing the circumnavigation of the great French explorer Louis de Bougainville 1766-69. Bougainville's voyage presented a milestone in the history of voyages, not only for its discoveries in the Pacific, but also for the way it was organized with true scientific precision. The map is unusual in that it depicts the world in a flat projection so that western Europe and Africa are shown twice, both as the beginning point and ending point of the voyage. The continents are devoid of detail, with the only place names being Bougainville's landfalls.
