Large and fascinating double hemisphere map showing the colonial empires and countries throughout the world at the independence of the United States (and therefore the first fracture in the British Empire). The map is beautifully colored according to the key at top. The large regions of the world, which are not either under colonial domination or a 'recognized' empire, include most of western and northern North America, the southern tip of South America, nearly all of Africa and Arabia, Australia and most of the East Indies. Hughes has used an interesting devise to show the polar regions - shrouded in clouds. Dissected and linen backed. Published by Seeley, Burnside & Seeley.
