This is a very interesting early plan of the city at the beginning of Japan's modern period. The map was drawn by T. Yoshii, revised by J.P. Ludlow and published by T. Kakashima & Co. in Osaka Japan. Thus, it is a fascinating combination of eastern and western cartography. The city streets are laid out, in European style, with major buildings shown surrounded by the mountainous countryside with village locations noted (in Japanese style). Large compass rose orients the map with north to the left.
