This scarce, heart-shaped world map is based on Waldseemuller’s important map of 1516 and Apian’s map of 1520. The map reflects Magellan’s reports of the South American continent and the vast Pacific Ocean. In the north, the North American coastline is depicted as parts of a large island, with a direct route to Asia at the Equator. The woodblock map was cut by Heinrich Vogtherr the Elder and first published in Honter's Rudimenta Cosmographica. It was issued numerous times thereafter in a number of publications up to 1602. This issue has the blockcutter's initials, date and the label America omitted. On a full sheet of text.
